A Heavy Hitting Diesel with European Luxury? The Peugeot 5008 Diesel
The Peugeot 5008 SUV has slowly but surely moved away from its traditional people mover roots. This popular seven seater will appeal to drivers with large families, and those who are looking for something a little more adventurous and attractive. The powerful diesel powered Peugeot GT makes a great case for the latter. It's just as stylish and packed with the same modern design and advanced technological features as its petrol powered sibling, the Peugeot 5008 GT Line (the only other variant sold in Australia). The added characteristic of the GT diesel also makes part of the reason why Peugeot 5008 is not only compared to its traditional rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, Nissan X Trail and Kia Sorento, but also to other large and more premium SUV offerings such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
No sacrifice on the modern luxuries
Just like the 5008 GT Line the 5008 GT comes with a stylish exterior with a design signature that’s in synch with the rest of the Peugeot range (ie. it has that “Peugeot look”). It has a sleek muscular look with distinct claw-like tail lights and full led headlights featuring dynamic indicators, flanking a two-tone radiator grille. The Peugeot 5008 GT bears an impressive profile from front to rear. The quality continues into the interior with a similarly stylish theme. The cabin is spacious with trimmings and seats that are fitted with high quality upholstery. Combine that with a panoramic sunroof with a view that makes the cabin feel even more open. With Peugeot’s own i- Cockpit design the driver is the star, and you get everything from a large 12-inch customisable digital instrument panel paired with the uniquely positioned multifunction leather steering wheel. The centre console houses the infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen that allows you to access all the car's functions, including satellite navigation and smartphone connection using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. There are a maximum of seven seats all up over three rows in the Peugeot 5008 GT. Seats in the second row are spacious enough and comfortable, with enough room to fit Isofix mounted child seats in all three spots. The third row seats can also be completely removed from the car altogether, freeing up some weight and giving you even more space in the boot to work with. Drive with confidence in knowing that you are well protected in the Peugeot 5008 GT. It comes with a host of standard indispensable safety features including six airbags, ABS with brake force distribution and electronic stability control. You also get the benefit of the latest in driving assistance, with features such as driver attention alert, adaptive cruise control, active blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist to help the driver stay safe behind the wheel and in traffic.
The power of diesel
It’s the diesel engine lying under the hood that sets the Peugeot 5008 GT apart from the GT Line and other 5008 variants. The 2.0-litre BlueHDi turbo diesel with stop & start system paired to an EAT8 8 speed auto transmission is exclusive only to the 5008 GT variant. With a maximum power of 131kW and maximum torque of 400Nm, it makes the 5008 GT the most powerful version of the range. There are some advantages to running a diesel engine. The extra torque that the diesel engine generates makes it great for carrying bigger loads and towing, with the 5008 GT able to tow a maximum braked trailer weight of 1800kg (that’s a whole 450kg more than the petrol powered variants). As such, the 5008 GT is ideal for heavier duty work or towing tasks. The other big advantage of the turbo diesel engine is that it provides much better fuel economy. The 5008 GT turbo diesel consumes 5.0 L/100km, and is about 30 percent more efficient than the turbo petrol. This makes the 5008 GT excellent for travelling long distances and out into rural and remote areas (where diesel is also more widely available). And from an environmental standpoint, it emits lower emissions too.
Tough and reliable
Diesel engines are known to be more reliable, being built more ruggedly to withstand the rigours of dealing with a more dense fuel. They also require less overall maintenance, and if done correctly, usually last much longer than petrol engines before requiring any major repairs. And Peugeot has a history of making diesel cars that can handle even the toughest environments. We just have to look at its success in the grueling Dakar Rally as a good example. Formerly known as the Paris-Dakar Rally, the Dakar Rally is a famous off-road endurance event that runs over a period of around two weeks every year. The Peugeot team won the Dakar Rally three years straight from 2016 until 2018. In 2017 the team even swept the podium, with all 1-2-3 finish. And all the winning DKR Peugeots were diesel-powered.
A heavy hitting Peugeot
The gutsy diesel powered Peugeot 5008 GT delivers an engaging driving experience with power, efficiency and versatility. This makes the 5008 GT an ideal large family SUV and a great option if you’re taking it out on the open road. The diesel power, coupled with the fact that you still get the same high quality build, design and comfort you will find throughout the rest of the 5008 range, forms a winning combination.
